Jim Bowie Festival

Jim Bowie and Bowie Knife on the banks of the Mississippi River

James Bowie and an opponent by the Mississippi River

On a clear, warm day in September, 1827, two groups of men met on a sandbar of the Mississippi River, not far from Vidalia, Louisiana.  When Jim Bowie defended himself against sword and pistol that day, he changed history and made a legend of the man – and his knife.  We honor the significance and history of that great fight with a festival each year.

The Jim Bowie Festival takes place in September on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi, very close to where the original fight took place.

It’s a big day of fun, with a Homemade Pie Bake-off, the Backyard BBQ Contest, live music, inflatables, slides, and rides for the kids, arts and crafts, food and live music for the grown-ups!
